Poland’s First-Ever Offshore Wind Farm, Baltic Power, Has Been Switched On

Located 23 kilometres off the northern coast near Choczewo and Łeba, Poland’s first-ever offshore wind farm, Baltic Power, has now delivered its first electricity to the national grid – marking a historic milestone for the country’s energy sector. Co-developed by ORLEN Group and Northland Power, the wind farm will provide electricity to approximately 1.5 million Polish households once fully operational, which remains on track for the second half of 2026. With 54 of its 76 turbines already installed, the farm features the new generation of 15 MW wind turbines and is expected to have a lifecycle of up to 30 years, making it a major part of Poland’s energy transition.

Although Baltic Power is leading the way, it won’t be the last. Building on this strong foundation, Baltica 2 Offshore Wind Farm – developed by PGE and Ørsted – is now under construction, with offshore foundation work underway and set to continue through to the end of 2026. First power is expected in the first half of 2027, with full commercial operation targeted for the end of 2027. The project aims to generate around 1.5GW of renewable energy (slightly more than Baltic Power’s 1.2GW) and will consist of 107 wind turbines with a capacity of 14 MW each, powering approximately 2.5 million homes.

For a country that still generates the majority of its electricity from coal, this represents the beginning of a major shift towards renewable energy. To put the long-term ambitions into context, Poland is targeting 18 to 20 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity by 2040, a number that would require dozens more projects at Baltic Power’s scale.

Poland’s ambitious wind capacity target signals a strong pipeline of work across Europe and represents real opportunity for freelancers looking ahead to future projects! This is a welcome dose of optimism in what has otherwise been a difficult period for the market. With Poland talking about energy transformation for years; Baltic Power is actual proof that talk is now becoming delivery.
